What is an SSL certificate?
An SSL certificate does two jobs. First, encryption: it locks the connection between a visitor's browser and your server so passwords, card numbers, and messages cannot be read in transit. That is the padlock and the https:// in the address bar. Second, identity: the certificate is a signed statement from a certificate authority (CA) about who is on the other end of the connection.
Without SSL, browsers mark your site "Not Secure", search engines rank it lower, and modern features simply refuse to work. It stopped being optional years ago, which is exactly why we include free, auto-renewing certificates with every site on every plan.
Why would anyone pay for one?
Because the second job, identity, has levels. A free certificate proves you control the domain and nothing more. Paid certificates add verified identity and money behind the promise: DV (domain validation) adds a CA warranty, insurance that pays your visitors if the CA mis-issues; OV (organization validation) puts your verified legal company name inside the certificate, which procurement departments and compliance frameworks increasingly require; EV (extended validation) is the deepest vetting a CA performs, the standard for banks and payment processors.
The honest rule: a blog or portfolio never needs a paid certificate. A store, a SaaS handling client data, or any business whose customers ask "who am I really giving my card to?" benefits from OV or EV, and some industries simply require it.

Do I need to buy an SSL certificate?

When does a paid certificate make sense?
When you need what free certificates do not carry: organization or extended validation showing your verified business identity, commercial warranties from the certificate authority, or wildcard coverage managed as a single certificate for compliance reasons.
Is the encryption weaker on free certificates?
No. Encryption strength is identical; browsers treat both the same. Paid certificates differ in validation depth, warranty, and lifecycle options, not in cryptography.
