History & origin

Over 30 years of uncompromising stability.

Debian was created by Ian Murdock and first announced in August 1993 — making it one of the oldest Linux distributions still in active development. The name is a combination of his girlfriend (later wife) Debra and his own name Ian. From its earliest days, Debian was conceived as a distribution that would be maintained openly and collaboratively, with a strong commitment to free software principles.

Unlike most Linux distributions, Debian is governed entirely by its community through the Debian Social Contract and the Debian Free Software Guidelines — there is no parent company, no corporate owner, and no commercial agenda driving its development. This independence has made Debian one of the most trusted and widely deployed server operating systems in the world.

Debian's release model is famously conservative: new stable releases are shipped when they're ready, not on a fixed schedule. This results in packages that are older but extensively tested — a deliberate tradeoff that makes Debian the go-to choice for servers where stability matters more than cutting-edge software versions. Ubuntu, the world's most popular server OS, is built directly on Debian's foundation.

Pros & cons

What makes Debian the right — and wrong — choice.

An honest assessment to help you decide if Debian is the right OS for your Cloud Cube.

✓ Pros
  • Extremely stable — packages only enter stable after rigorous testing; regressions are rare
  • Minimal footprint — Debian's base install is lean; install only what your workload needs
  • No corporate influence — 100% community-governed with no vendor lock-in
  • Excellent security track record — the Debian Security team issues patches promptly
  • Massive package repository — over 59,000 packages in the official repos via apt
  • Foundation of Ubuntu — any apt/dpkg knowledge transfers directly to Debian
  • Decades of production use — battle-tested on everything from small VPS to hyperscale infrastructure
✗ Cons
  • Older packages — stable releases freeze package versions; software can be significantly behind upstream
  • No cPanel support — cPanel/WHM requires AlmaLinux or CloudLinux
  • Less beginner-friendly — more manual configuration than Ubuntu; assumes admin familiarity
  • Slower release cadence — new stable versions ship every 2–3 years, major version upgrades require planning
  • Smaller commercial ecosystem — fewer vendors offer formal Debian support vs RHEL or Ubuntu
Best for

Debian is the choice when stability is non-negotiable.

Experienced Linux admins who want a lean, predictable base without Ubuntu's corporate packaging choices often reach for Debian.

Custom server stacks

Developers building their own LAMP/LEMP or custom application stacks on a minimal, trusted base.

Docker hosts

Debian's minimal footprint makes it an excellent base for Docker host servers — only run what you need.

Database servers

Predictable, stable environment for PostgreSQL, MySQL, MariaDB, and Redis deployments.

DirectAdmin

DirectAdmin fully supports Debian — a good combination for hosting panels on a stable base.

Security-focused deployments

Debian's conservative update policy and strong security team make it a trusted choice for security-conscious environments.

Mail servers

Postfix, Dovecot, and mail infrastructure on Debian is well-documented and extremely stable over time.

Control panel compatibility

Debian has good panel support — except cPanel.

Most modern panels support Debian, making it a viable base for managed hosting environments.
