Apps / Code Server

Managed Code Server hosting.
One server, no app limits.

VS Code in the browser, secured behind SSL on your own domain.

What it is

Code Server is VS Code in the browser, running on your own server: your extensions, your terminal, your projects, reachable from any machine with a screen, including the iPad.

Minimum RAM

2 GB

Fits on SC-2GB; SC-4GB is the comfortable pick with room to stack.

What we install

The playbook deploys the current code-server behind HTTPS with authentication enforced, a persistent workspace on the server's NVMe, language toolchains you need preinstalled on request, and the service supervised so it survives reboots.

What managed covers

OS and platform updates, daily snapshots plus dual offsite backups of your workspace, monitoring, and the managed firewall in front of the editor. The dev environment stops being tied to one laptop and starts being infrastructure.

The app is $0. The managed server is the only bill, and everything above is part of it.

What does managed Code Server hosting include?

A secured, always-on VS Code with your workspace backed up daily and the host patched by us. Close the laptop mid-task, open the same terminal tabs from another machine an hour later; the server did not go anywhere.

Why a cloud dev environment?

Because builds and dev servers run on server NVMe and server bandwidth instead of your battery, the environment is identical from every device, and a stolen laptop is an inconvenience rather than a code leak. It is the dev-container idea with the container owned by you.

Can it sit next to my other dev tools?

That is the natural setup: Gitea holding the repos, Docker for the runtimes, Code Server as the front door, all on one managed server. Your entire development world becomes one flat monthly bill.

Is it safe to expose an IDE to the internet?

It ships behind HTTPS with authentication required, the managed firewall and IDS in front, and if you prefer zero public surface, WireGuard from the catalog makes the editor VPN-only at no extra cost.

Stack it

Code Server runs well with.

Same server, no extra bill. These are the companions our team installs next to Code Server most often.

Gitea

+1 GB

Lightweight self-hosted Git with issues, actions, and packages. Your code on your server.

Docker

+1 GB

The bare container engine, current stable, with the daemon configured sanely. Build whatever you want on top.

Frequently asked questions

How much RAM does Code Server need?

2 GB is a comfortable floor for the editor plus a language server. Heavy compilation or big Docker-based dev stacks want 4 GB or more.

Do my extensions work?

Extensions from the Open VSX registry install normally, which covers the large majority of what people use daily.

Can multiple developers use it?

code-server is single-user by design; a team gets one instance each, stacked on the same server. They stay isolated and each is still $0.
